Think about it. Why else would our County Government want to get you to give them additional tax money? They saw the Lottery coming and began post dating checks, making plans for all that CASH but when the rubber met the road and everybody woke up the streets of gold just weren't there.
Fearing reprisals from just such areas as the Western Counties the General Assembly then in it's infinite wisdom allowed these counties to have the power to get money from it's own tax base through Transfer Tax Fees instead of the Lottery.
What a joke!
Now is it the local levels fault for not having the funds to cash the checks or fill the promises made? NO! It is their fault for spending or promising the funds they didn't have.
Stupidity at it's finest!
Isn't it time somebody stood up and looked around? We couldn't possibly run our family budgets like this. It's like the old addabge of "keeping up with the Jone's".
Rather than try to always run around in a new car or have a new house, how about let's make sure the car or in this case, the school we've got runs well before we junk it. Do we need new buildings? Or just get a handle on what we do have and manage it better. Oh things wear out, but a fine example of a building that the county abandoned once upon a time just because it just wasn't worth saving, is now one of Southwestern Tech's best satellite Facility. I don't guess it was as big a problem as it was made out to be, considering that the old Almond School will probably be around even now for years to come.

Well folks, I have never heard of anyone in any tax office refusing to take cash, checks or credit cards. NOT, just for the taxes that they say is owed to them, BUT, anytime you want to stop in and hand them a little extra, they will be more than happy to take it. Sometime, when you have "extra money" just stop in, bet you, they'll take it.
keeping up with the Joneses? as in Glen Jones....funny. He should be in jail this time next year.
what commise gave SCC the old school-I think it was not the present elected group
You are correct it was not these commissioners nor was it the present Board of Education that gave away the Almond School. Does it make it anymore questionable? Yes, the SCC complex brings much needed technical support and training to this area of the county for all.
At the point that this was going on, there appeared to be a master plan in place for the future of the county. That plan was to develop the facilities which we now have.
Where is the specific master plan for the next generation. Where are the stats to back up the projections for the space requirements. As we speak the school system lacks in it's everyday scenarios for the materials and equipment which is needed and it appears we default to grant writing and candy sales. Why isn't this brought out to the public? Why don't we address the immediate needs first? A well educated child can exist in less than a state of the art facility. The envirnoment of teaching begins with the classroom and the teaching staff. I'm not advocating compensation for the teachers but more so the ability of the system to give them the resources which they need to do there jobs in a timely manner. As it stands now they devote a tremendous amount to getting ready to teach and making sure they have what they need. When it should be laying at their feet. We trust teachers with our very future but yet don't trust their judgement. Make sure to understand I'm talking about the actual teachers not some "has beens" or "bearucratic retirees" who are looking for who knows what in unspoken commitments.
I voted against the Land Tax but if I were posed the question of donating to the materials needed in teaching our children here in Swain and a comprehensive explanation of the dispursement was available upon request, then a tax question would be in order and I definately would support it!
