The North Shore Road

THERE SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ANY OPPOSITION TO THIS ROAD PROJECT!
What a shame it is that the center core of the community has had to struggle for a
completion, that by peremptory rights is already ours, which was placed into our hands by the foresight and integrity of our forefathers. The completion of the NORTH SHORE ROAD
(sometime locally referred to as the ROAD TO NOWHERE) is a simple legal binding contract supported by laws of the nation, state, and county.

WHAT GOOD IS TEMPORARY MONEY TO A COMMUNITY THAT IS LOSING ITS VOICE? This community is being systematically shunned by the majority of its elected officials. The question becomes WHY. WHY is financial retribution more important than this government's commitments to its people? the collective group within a community provides a support system. We should not have to live without this. Have we not been patient with the government? Have we not waited for you to come through on your commitment with completion of honor?

The removal of our moral vaues that contain the integrity of this nation is tearing this country apart. We are not ignorant of the consequences in the direction of corruption that influence thes nation's actions. The loss of America's cornerstone is truly a leap backwards into the dark ages. The amount of hatred directed against this country is a good measurement of the dissatisfaction at home and abroad. WHY IS THE GOVERNMENT NOT ACKNOWLEDGING THIS?

This nation is a juvenile compared to the age of other civilizations. Often, the struggle to achieve a concept is taken to a point of destruction instead of productive stability. There within lies the new age thinking of todays marketable trade of repersentation. The overall lack of intervention on the part of our government's representation is not acceptable. DAY IN AND DAY OUT, we the people, for the people, by the people work to maintain the supportive structure of this great nation. HAS THAT CONTRIBUTION BECOME SO MI-NUTE THAT WE HAVE BEEN DISMISSED FROM IMPORTANCE? If our congressmen and an handfull of citizens cannot convey understanding, HOW WILL THE WHOLE FIND REASON?

This nation's birth of rights, sacrifices, and past achievements represent a remarkable migration of circumstances that created the strong foundation of this country. Attainable equality was established by the displacing and discarding of individuals from the roots of old civilizations. Our ancestors contruced a higher quality of life for all citizens of this nation.

This government's legislative power determines through established law how you will proceed on the issue of the NORTH SHORE ROAD. THIS WILL INDICATE YOUR RECOGNITION OR ABUSE OF THESE LAWS. You, our representatives, are responsible for using the wisdom passed down to us by our forefathers.

REMEMBER, YOU ARE CHARGED WITH PERFORMING YOUR JOBS WHICH WE ENTRUSTED TO YOU BY OUR VOTES.

Swain County should not be allowed to accept any settlement that does not provide adequate access and accomodations for those physically unable to walk to the homesites, former communities, and cemeteries of the families and friends of those displaced by the construction of Fontana Lake. Many of those had to move outside of Swain County and are not represented or served by any settlement with Swain County.

If all the people who had to leave and their children and grandchildren had known about the EIS, perhaps their participation at least by comments to Arcadis study may have resulted in a different attitude on the part of the NPS. The anti roaders are well organized and apparently sent in far graeater resposes to the reports discussed at all the meetings we attented.

According to a Mr Breedlove, its the people for the road who are blocking the settlement, what did he expect? People who strongly believe in this issue are not going to go quietly into the night. Swain County was paid long ago and that payment should have paid off the bonds for 288, so why did this not happen, who gained from that payment, where are they or their heirs, and who owes the money back to Swain County?

Our rights are being taken away again by the park service. At the last decoration on Hazel Creek Dale Ditmanson of the park service only let 13 people go the cemeteries for Decoration, the rest of the people were forced to stay behind at the Calhoun House. They need to build the road!

You folks want to have guaranteed access to the cemeteries? There's nothing in writing about that; it's completely up to the Park service.
The only way you'll get guarantees is to tie it to a settlement.

Or maybe you folks who support the settlement suddenly need the cemetery folks in order to get your hands on the money! I dont get the impression that these folks
are yet willing to sellout their heritage in order to give more money to the folks calling the shots in Swain County.

To Anonymous--Yes we do have guaranteed access to cemeteries on the north shore you might ought to read some letters dated July 1931 and then you might have enough knowledge to speek on something of this importance. Read more old documents you might learn more.

It appears that some individuals have not had the opportunity to travel beyond the county lines of Swain County. It is troubling to me that fellow citizens have lost any and all respect to the memory of friends, loved ones and relatives whom have passed on and are interred only to be identified by a field of stones. There are no words appropriate to describe the disgrace, dishonor and disrespect of anyone not having reverence to the sacred grounds of the deceased, no matter whom they may be. This is what separates this great Nation from the animal world. Back to the original statement, and travel beyond Swain County, take a trip to Pearl Harbor, HI, go the visitors center of the National Park Service Memorial Site for the U.S.S. Arizona on the mainland, after the program in the auditorium, the National Park Service does provide at NO charge very nice boat trips over to the Memorial, NEVER limiting the number of persons whom can go, NEVER limiting the number of trips, NEVER denying the access of foreigners to take the boat ride to the Memorial, NEVER questioning the validity of WHY do you want to go. (check their website, Admission is Free, hours of ops 7:30 am to 5:00 pm, and only closed for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years Day). May I voice my disappointment to you, with your comment “The only way you’ll get guarantees is to tie it to a settlement” is a lame attempt to justify the selling off of the written contract, into a issued to the people of Swain County in 1943 to replace the flooded road and I must add, “to complete the Master Plan for the Park” to have an “around the Park road”. Educate yourself, read the contract, and the next time you ride 441 or the Blue Ridge Parkway, just think, (if you can, out of the money box), wow, a road, the scenery and access of an aging population that can no longer walk into these beautiful areas, drive a safe and secure paved highway and absorb “what God hath created”.
